4 Types of Lifting Slings and What They're Used For
There are several different types of lifting machines on the market but there are certain machines such as cranes that can't operate without ropes or slings. To lift heavy loads off the ground you need durable lifting slings that can withstand harsh conditions.
There are four different types of lifting sling you can use, learn what these slings are made of and what they are used for.
Webbing Lifting Slings
Webbing slings are made from durable polyester, polypropylene or polyamide and they're flexible and lightweight. They have two layers of webbing for increased durability. Furthermore, webbing slings have a wide flat load-bearing surface. With a webbing sling, you can lift loads of up to 20,000kg.
Since webbing slings are flexible, they can mould easily to the shape of irregular loads. A webbing sling is suitable for delicate loads because the soft material won't scratch or dent items. This type of sling is also resistant to water, acid, and alkaline damage.
Webbing slings are used for
Lifting boats: The flexibility and strength of a webbing sling make it suitable to lift boats. The soft material won't scratch or dent the finish of the vessel.
Climbing: This type of sling is used to climb trees, mountains, and high-rise buildings. It's fitted into rock features, lifting equipment or trees to protect climbers from falling.
Firefighting: Firefighters use webbing slings to rescue injured people. The sling forms a secure grip around someone so fire fighters can drag the person to safety. This is called the webbing sling drag.
Towing: The durability of webbing slings makes it suitable for towing cars of all weights. Additionally, the sling is easy to store so you can keep it in the boot of your car.
Chain Lifting Slings
Chain lifting slings come in a wide range of lengths. They're made from grades 80 or 100 chain and they're even more durable than webbing slings. With a chain sling, you can lift weights of up to 67,000kg. These slings are designed to withstand extreme temperatures and exposure to chemicals.
Chain slings are used for
Lifting car parts: Car engines are too heavy to remove from a vehicle manually. Use a single leg or three leg sling to lift engines out of vehicles with ease. You can also use chain slings to lift heavy cars off the road after an accident.
Shipping containers: A chain sling and a hook can lift heavy shipping containers off the ground and place them onto ships or loading bays.
Piping: Since chain slings are flexible, they can be fitted around cylindrical loads such as pipes. These pipes are lifted and lowered into the ground carefully using a chain sling.
Lumber: After chopping down large trees, chain slings are used to lift and load them onto the back of trucks.
Wire Rope Lifting Slings
Wire rope lifting slings are made from galvanised steel and can either have a fibre or steel core. This type of sling can withstand extreme temperatures of up to 204°C. Depending on the diameter you choose you can lift loads of up to 3400kg.
These slings can be made with soft eyes and thimbles in standard or customised lengths. You can also buy this sling in diameters between 8mm and 32mm.
Wire rope slings are used for
Marine industry: Wire rope is durable enough to tow heavy boats. It's also used to secure lifeboats to a ship. On sailboats, wire rope is used to lower and lift sails.
Amusement parks: This sling is used to bring rollercoaster cars to the top of the ride. The rope sling is also used to hold up swings and pull carts through amusement park attractions.
Stuntmen: In the entertainment industry stuntmen use wire rope to protect themselves from falling when doing action scenes.
Round Lifting Slings
Round slings are a multi-purpose sling made from soft polyester. Similar to webbing slings, round slings are soft and lightweight which makes them ideal to lift fragile loads. What's more, they are flexible so they can lift irregular shaped loads.
What round lifting slings are used for
Windows: Round slings can be used to lift large windows of any shape and size without scratching them.
Factory machinery: This type of sling is used to lift and place large machines inside factories.
Metal sheeting: A round sling can lift large rolls of metal sheeting off the ground to be placed on loading trucks or platforms.
What Are The Parts Of a Lifting Sling
A lifting sling is an indispensable tool used across diverse industries to lift and transport heavy loads safely and efficiently. We delve into its distinct components and crucial roles to gain a comprehensive understanding of this vital equipment. As a reputable round lifting sling manufacturer, we aim to shed light on the significance of each component, equipping you with the knowledge to make informed decisions for your lifting needs.

Webbing - The Robust Foundation
At the heart of every lifting sling lies the essential element called webbing. Crafted from durable and flexible materials like nylon, polyester, or polypropylene, webbing is specifically engineered to withstand tremendous weight. As the primary component, webbing provides the strength and support for lifting heavy objects, offering versatility with various configurations to cater to specific lifting requirements.
Eyes - Secure Connection Points
The eyes, loops at the sling's extremities, serve as anchor points for hooks or lifting devices. They are crucial in securely fastening the load and ensuring even weight distribution. Round lifting sling manufacturers offer diverse eye types, each delivering unique benefits in strength, attachment convenience, load dispersion, and resistance to torsional stress.
Body - Support and Stability
The body of a lifting sling is responsible for load-bearing and determines the sling's overall configuration. Different body configurations cater to specific lifting needs, ranging from single-body slings for general purposes to double-body slings for heavier loads and endless slings for enhanced flexibility.
Stitching - Strength and Reliability
Stitching holds the webbing and other components together, ensuring the sling's strength and reliability. Quality stitching prevents slippage, maintains load integrity, and enhances safety during lifting operations, with box stitching and zigzag stitching being commonly used patterns known for their resilience.
Hardware - Versatility and Safety
Hardware components like shackles, hooks, and rings enhance the sling's versatility and safety. Shackles provide secure attachment points, hooks enable quick connections to lifting devices, and rings offer flexibility in multiple attachment options. Selecting the right hardware based on lifting requirements is essential for safe and efficient operations.
Additional Components and Accessories - Enhanced Functionality
Lifting slings may include additional features and accessories to boost functionality and safety. Sling tags provide vital information, while identification codes aid in tracing origin and specifications. Protective sleeves or edge guards can be added to safeguard the sling against abrasion and damage during use.
How To Choose a Lifting Sling
Choosing the Lifting sling for lighting can be confusing, but it's important to take the environment and conditions where the lifting sling will be used into consideration.
Nylon Lifting Sling
Nylon lifting slings are a popular choice because of their multi-purpose uses. A nylon web sling is unaffected by petroleum products like grease and oil. Nylon slings are also resilient to specific chemicals including ethers, strong alkalies and aldehydes.
Nylon webbing is not a good choice for uses involving bleaching agents or acids, or for use in temperatures over 194 degrees Fahrenheit (90 degrees Celsius). Nylon also stretches at approximately 8-10%, so it should not be used when elongation is not intended.
Polyester Lifting Sling
Like a nylon lifting straps, polyester round slings also have temperature guidelines, and are not advised for use in temperatures over 194 degrees Fahrenheit (90 degrees Celsius).
Unlike nylon, they will stretch only approximately 3% of its rated capacity. A polyester round sling can handle acidic environments because the fabric is not affected by bleaching agents or common acids. Polyester webbing, however, should not be used if it will come in contact with sulfuric acids or alkaline.
Chain Lifting Sling
Chain lifting slings are ideal for rugged environments and jobs. They resist abrasions, cutting and can maintain their strength and integrity even in extremely high temperatures up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204 degree Celsius).
Chain slings are generally constructed in Grade 80 steel, but a Grade 100 chain is usually available on request. Grade 100 chain offers more strength (about 25% more) for lifting chains, yet weighs less than traditional Grade 80 lift chains. Another benefit of a chain sling is its ability to be customized for almost any type of lift.
Wire Rope Lifting Sling
Wire rope slings are similar to a chain sling in that it offers excellent durability, strength and resistance to high temperatures. Wire rope, however, is more cost-efficient than chain so it's a great choice is price is a concern. Because abrasion-resistance and flexibility of the wire rope can change depending on its configuration, a chain sling can be manufactured using a specific type of wire rope.
Wire rope is made from either 6x19 or 6x37 classes of rope. A 6x19 is the most widely used because of its ideal combination of flexibility and abrasion resistance. A 6x37 class rope is more flexible, but offers less resistance to abrasion.
The first step in choosing an appropriate web sling is to determine what material you need the sling to be made of. There are several different lifting slings to choose from including nylon slings, polyester round slings, wire rope slings, and chain slings.
By looking at the properties of a lifting sling, it will help you determine what kind of sling to purchase. Nylon slings are strong and relatively inexpensive which makes them a very popular choice. Polyester slings don't stretch as much when tension is applied and also have different tolerances to certain chemicals.
They are also very flexible which prevents them from locking up on a load. Wire rope slings offer high strength and flexibility at a smaller diameter than polyester. Wire rope slings tend to be a little higher priced than nylon or polyester but are pivotal parts of the sling industry.
Chain slings are the heavy duty slings of the bunch. Chain slings are extremely flexible and offer superior strength for any situation. Chain slings can be more expensive than the other slings but their strength is second to none.
Safety Instructions For The Use Of Lifting Sling
When using lifting slings, it is crucial to take the right safety measures to be able to lift safely and effectively and to minimize the risk of injury or damage:

3 Factors You Should Consider When Choosing Lifting Sling
Know, beforehand, the weight of the load you intend to lift. It will help you choose the lifting sling with matching strength. For instance, if you are lifting bulky generators or tanks, you can use synthetic web slings, because they will not only support the weight of the load but also save them from getting scratched. Your tank or generator would get scratched if you, instead, used wire rope slings. Remember that the aim is not only to lift an object but also to safeguard the object from getting damaged in the lifting process. Mostly, the heavier objects are usually made of hard metals, making them easy to lift using rough lifting slings such as alloy chain slings.
The shape and design of a load will tell you where the center of gravity is. You do not want to miss the center of the load when lifting, as the load will swing in a strong thrust and cause damage to people and property. When lifting irregularly- shaped objects, consider choosing lifting slings with the most flexibility. Synthetic slings work best for these objects with irregular shapes because they can easily roll around the object and take the object’s shape. Because of the flexibility of synthetic slings, you do not have to worry about the center of gravity when lifting rounded objects and other irregularly shaped objects. You can also consider using synthetic round slings and synthetic web slings for such objects.
You might need to lift some objects that have sharp edges during the construction project. Here, you should remember that lifting slings such as synthetic rope slings and synthetic round slings can be torn by sharp-edged objects. If this happens, it will cause a catastrophic fall, and the object would get damaged. For sharp-edged and abrasive objects, consider using alloy chain slings or wire rope slings.
For hot objects, you should use metal mesh slings as they withstand hot temperatures. Metal mesh slings are also resistant to corrosion, so you can also use them to lift corrosive objects.
